المضغة أو الجنين (باللاتينية: embryo) هي متعضية متعددة الخلايا حقيقية النواة ثنائية الصيغة الصبغية في مراحلها الأولى من النمو.

في المتعضيات التي تتكاثر جنسيا، حالما يقوم الحيوان المنوي بتلقيح البويضة فتكون النتيجة خلية ملقحة تمتلك DNA كامل (ثنائية الصيغة) قادمة من كلا الوالدين.

(صيغة من الأم وصيغة من الأب). في النباتات والحيوانات وبعض الأوليات، تبدأ الخلية بالانقسام عن طريق الانقسام الخلوي لإنتاج متعضية جديدة متعددة الخلايا.

يشير مصطلح الجنين إلى المراحل المبكرة من هذا النماء بعد أن تنقسم اللاقحة مرة واحدة على الأقل إلى أن يتشكل كائن حي جديد.

An embryo (Latin: embryo) is a diploid eukaryotic multicellular organism in its early stages of development.

In sexually reproducing organisms, once a sperm fertilizes an egg, the result is a zygote that possesses complete (diploid) DNA from both parents (mouse and paternal moiety).

In plants, animals and some protozoans, the cell begins to divide by cell division to produce a new multicellular organism.

The term embryo refers to the early stages of this development after the zygote has divided at least once until a new organism has formed.
